Berkeley County Notification System

Expanding its communications with citizens, Berkeley County has implemented the Self-Registration Portal (SRP) for Reverse 911. This online web tool, accessible through the Berkeley County website, Emergency Notification System (BCENS), allows local residents to proactively add their cell, unpublished and VoIP phone numbers, and emails to the notification database to receive emergency and non-emergency messages issued by law enforcement, fire, EMS and emergency management.
“This system will give Berkeley County officials unprecedented communications capabilities during such occasions as critical incidents, severe weather and hazardous materials events,” says Dan Davis, Berkeley county Supervisor.
Upon activation, the application sends voice and text messages via telephone (landline and cell), SMS, email, etc., instantly providing most individuals situation details or instructions. For others, it sends text messages to mobile devices, activates pagers, delivers emails or even triggers other alerts.
With the increasing number of people relying on mobile phones, email and SMS(texting) communications, tools like the SRP will serve as a supplement to the already established Reverse 911 System. It will help expand the range and effectiveness of the critical notification system beyond existing 911 databases, which currently contain only landlines. In such a cell phone-equipped population, the SRP will help to leverage our reverse contact infrastructure to a much wider audience of citizens who wish to receive updates from Berkeley County. The SRP will also provide registrants the ability to update, change, and opt in or out at any time.
