The Palmetto Trail
The Palmetto Trail is South Carolina’s largest pedestrian and bicycle trail, running from the sea to the mountains. This massive trail is one of only 16 cross-state trails in the U.S., and it’s earned the distinction of being federally designated as a Millennium Legacy Trail. The final plans call for the trail to run 425 miles. It’s currently two-thirds complete.
This Palmetto Trail consists of a series of “passages”, accessible for both single-day and multi-day trips. The Palmetto Conservation website describes the trail as, “primitive pathways along knife-edged mountaintops and treks through maritime, sandhill, and piedmont forests. Other sections are urban bikeways, greenways and rail-to-trail conversions. Two passages include Revolutionary War battlefields. Together or separate, the passages reveal the rich diversity and the history, culture and geography of the Palmetto State.”
The Berkeley portion of the trail takes nature seekers and adventurers through two distinct areas: 1) the Lake Moultrie Passage, running along the perimeter of Lake Moultrie, and 2) the Swamp Fox Passage, which transverses through the Francis Marion National Forest.
