MONCKS CORNER, S.C. – (Tuesday, June 23, 2026) – Berkeley County has awarded $1,015,276 in Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) to 10 local agencies and nonprofit organizations. County Council approved the recommended funding allocations at its meeting on Monday, June 22, 2026.
In partnership with Civitas LLC, the county established a CDBG Advisory Committee to review applicants and determine eligible groups before making a recommendation to Council. The money stems from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and will provide Berkeley County communities with resources to address unique community development needs. Funding has been awarded to the following local organizations for costs associated with public facilities and public services:
- Changed Lives Ministry – $98,500 for warehouse renovation for workforce rehabilitation program
- Pineville Eadytown Park – $108,425 for playground equipment
- Wassamasaw Tribe Varnertown Indians – $75,000 for food distribution center (interior uplift)
- Miracle Academy – $98,750 for agricultural program (green house) & signage for farmers market days
- Cainhoy Community Center – $100,000 for facility upgrades
- Berkeley Seniors (Goose Creek Senior Center) – $75,000 for an outdoor pavilion and facility supplies
- Town of Bonneau – $50,000 for park upgrades and equipment
- Town of St. Stephen – $75,000 for park upgrades and playground equipment
- Fire Departments – $200,000 for fire rescue and life-saving equipment
- Berkeley County Park Improvements – $134,601 for ADA improvements and park upgrades
The CDBG Program provides annual grants on a formula basis to states, cities, and counties to develop viable urban communities by providing decent housing and a suitable living environment, and by expanding economic opportunities, principally for low- and moderate-income persons.
