The Berkeley County Probate Court issues marriage licenses. All transactions are completed online only. Payment is accepted by cash, money order, or credit/debit card.

24-Hour Waiting Period
South Carolina law requires a twenty-four (24) hour waiting period following receipt of a marriage license application. Once this waiting period has expired, the marriage license will be available for pickup or mailed to the address indicated on the application.
If the online application is incomplete or contains any errors, an email will be sent to Party A requesting any additional information or documentation necessary to process the application.

Both parties must provide both a Social Security Number verification and a valid Photo ID.

General Information
- A Berkeley County marriage license is valid anywhere in South Carolina.
- You may apply in any South Carolina county — residency is not required.
- A South Carolina marriage license may only be used to marry within South Carolina. If marrying in another state, apply for a license in that state.
- You must be 18 years of age or older to apply. Berkeley County does not issue marriage licenses to individuals under the age of 18.
- A blood test is not required in South Carolina.
License Expiration
A Berkeley County marriage license does not expire.
Certified Copies
Certified copies may be obtained after the original executed license has been returned to our office. The fee is $5.00 per copy (Cash, Money Order, or Credit/Debit Card). You may also request a certified copy online or use the Marriage License Lookup to check the status of your license.
Do Not Apply If…
You are not eligible to apply for a marriage license if:
- You are currently married and your prior marriage has not been legally dissolved by a Final Order of Divorce signed by a judge and filed with the Clerk of Court; or
- You have identified yourself as being in a common-law marriage that has not been legally dissolved by a Final Order of Divorce signed by a judge and filed with the Clerk of Court; or
- Either or both parties are currently incarcerated.
Marriage Ceremony Officiants
Only Ministers of the Gospel, accepted Jewish Rabbis, and officers authorized to administer oaths in South Carolina may perform a marriage ceremony. Please refer to South Carolina Code of Laws Section 20-1-20 (opens in new tab).
Premarital Counseling Tax Credit
A one-time $50 tax credit is available for qualifying premarital counseling. The certification must be signed by the counselor and submitted at the time of application. Immediately after successfully submitting your online application, email the completed Certification of Completion of Premarital Preparation Course form to vog.csytnuocyelekreb@esnecilegairram.
