Berkeley County, South Carolina (“Berkeley County,” “we,” “our”) operates
the Our Berkeley mobile application (“App”). This privacy policy explains
what information the App collects, how it is used, and your rights as a user.
INFORMATION WE COLLECT
Location Information
The App may request access to your device’s location to provide
location-based services such as GIS mapping, office locations, landfill
and convenience center locations, and county road information. Location
access is optional. You may deny or revoke location permission at any time
in your device settings.
Information You Submit
Some features allow you to submit information directly to Berkeley County, including:
- Contact and problem reports (Report a Problem / Contact Us)
- Service requests (Animal Control, Mosquito Spraying, Building Inspection)
- Applications (Legal Residence, Homestead Exemption, Marriage License, etc.)
- Freedom of Information Act requests
Information submitted through these features is handled according to
Berkeley County’s standard records and privacy practices and applicable
South Carolina law.
Device and Usage Information
The App may collect standard technical information such as device type,
operating system version, and crash/diagnostic data to maintain and improve
app performance. This information is not linked to your identity.
THIRD-PARTY SERVICES
Some features in the App link to external websites and services operated
by third parties (such as payment processors, the SC DMV, or voter
registration). When you leave the App, the privacy policy of that
third-party service applies. Berkeley County is not responsible for the
privacy practices of external sites.
HOW WE USE YOUR INFORMATION
Berkeley County uses information collected through the App solely to:
- Deliver the county services you request
- Respond to your inquiries and service requests
- Maintain and improve the App
We do not sell your personal information. We do not use your information
for advertising or marketing purposes.
DATA SHARING
Berkeley County does not share your personal information with third parties
except as required to deliver a requested service (such as routing a payment
to a payment processor) or as required by South Carolina law.
DATA RETENTION
Information submitted through the App is retained in accordance with
Berkeley County’s records retention schedule and applicable state law.
YOUR CHOICES
Location: You may disable location access at any time in your device
settings.
Notifications: You may disable push notifications at any time in your
device settings.
CHILDREN’S PRIVACY
The App is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not
knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
CHANGES TO THIS POLICY
We may update this policy as the App changes. The “Last Updated” date at
the top of this page will reflect any changes.
