MONCKS CORNER, S.C. – (Friday, April 24, 2026) – Berkeley County is preserving more than 1,300 acres in Cordesville to protect the property from development and allow for public access. The County accepted the generous land donation from the Estate of Barbara Mead to use as a public county park.

The property is located along Highway 402 near Mepkin Abbey and consists of open space and wooded areas. The County will preserve the 1,300 acres as natural greenspace, with plans to transform it into a passive park. The County will request community feedback prior to any finalized plans for the property.

Berkeley County accepts land donations and applications to fund preservation projects as part of its Greenbelt Program. Eligible projects must support Greenbelt initiatives including, but not limited to, purchasing property for conservation, conservation easements, creating passive and active greenspace, protecting natural resources, protecting agricultural or heritage landscapes, and protecting scenic corridors. Interested applicants can visit BerkeleyGreenbelt.com for more information.

The Berkeley County Greenbelt Program is funded by the 2022 One Cent Sales Tax Referendum. Ten percent of the revenue from this sales tax, or an estimated $58.7 million over seven years, will be used to finance Greenbelt initiatives.

“We are proud to conserve this property and expand access to greenspace to the people of Berkeley County. Projects like these ensure the protection of our natural landscape while investing in the quality of life of our communities.” – Johnny Cribb, Berkeley County Supervisor
