MONCKS CORNER, S.C. – (Friday, May 16, 2025) – The Summerville Mayor’s Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities has named Berkeley County Project SEARCH student Justin Grant as its 2024-25 Student of the Year. The award was presented to Justin at the organization’s Annual Awards Luncheon at the Summerville Country Club on Wednesday, May 7, 2025. This is the organization’s 35th year celebrating the community of people with differing abilities. Justin will also receive a small scholarship prize with his award.
Justin is a senior at Stratford High School and part of the 2024-25 Berkeley County Project SEARCH class. He is a member of Renaissance and has also received Berkeley County School District’s Turnaround Award and Difference Maker Award, which was renamed the Justin Grant Award for Leadership. Justin is an Assistant Soccer Coach volunteer for Stratford High School and assists with the Athletic Booster Club, in addition to serving as a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Unified Knights.
“I first met Justin while visiting his classroom at Stratford High School. He welcomed me warmly and asked thoughtful questions, already showing a deep commitment to his growth and to education. Justin has always been determined to succeed and to make a positive impact in everything he does. This recognition is truly well-deserved.” –Superintendent Anthony Dixon, Berkeley County School District
“I am very proud of Justin and his accomplishments. Justin’s ability to remain determined, empathetic, and proactive is a testament to his character. I have known Justin since he was in the ninth grade, and he has drastically changed into the great young man that he is today. I wish Justin health, happiness, and success in the future.” -Dan Davis, Project SEARCH instructor, Berkeley County School District
Each year, starting in January, nominations may be submitted for awards with The Summerville Mayor’s Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities. A Scholarship Committee then reviews all nominations and selects those individuals who go above and beyond other nominees in each category. The following comments were included on Justin’s nomination form:
“His positive attitude and relentless drive to make a difference in the world really shines through in his personality and fortitude to overcome obstacles. He proves that a person’s value is not defined by their limitations but by their actions and their impact on others. He is someone who truly inspires those around him by his ability and actions to overcome any challenge he faces.”
Project SEARCH, a program that started with Berkeley County in 2017, prepares young people with significant disabilities for success in employment opportunities. Throughout the school year, these students work in departments at Berkeley County Government and develop skills and training to prepare them for future jobs. The program has been made possible in Berkeley County thanks to support from County leadership and partnerships with Berkeley County School District and S.C. Vocational Rehabilitation.
“This program is near and dear to our hearts at Berkeley County. Each year, these students showcase their hard work alongside our County departments and set the bar high when it comes to dedication and drive to their duties. Students learn valuable job and life skills, and in return, they bless our staff immensely. Each one shines and we are grateful to have them.” -Berkeley County Supervisor Johnny Cribb
“We are not surprised of Justin’s accomplishments. He stood out amongst the candidates last year during the Project Search interviews. We saw his potential to do great things in his community and on a job. Vocational Rehabilitation is very proud and honored to be a part of his success.” -Pat Gilliard, Area Consumer Services Manager, SC Vocational Rehabilitation
