Due to the rapid growth of technology along with the ever increasing need for phone numbers, new mandated changes applying to phone service will soon become effective.
Effective 09/19/2015, 10-digit dialing will be required for all long distance AND local calling within the 843 area code. For example, when dialing the Berkeley county switchboard number, you would dial 843-719-4234. This method of dialing has been activated and you may begin using it at any time.
Due to the scarcity of telephone numbers, it has also become necessary to add an additional area code to the existing 843 service area. Berkeley, Dorchester, Charleston, and a handful of other coastal South Carolina counties will be adding an 854 area code to our existing 843 area code. The new 854 area code will only be applied to new numbers and will not affect existing numbers.
