MONCKS CORNER, S.C. – (Tuesday, June 24, 2025) – Berkeley County has awarded $1,011,275.00 in Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) to 26 local agencies and nonprofit organizations. County Council approved the recommended funding allocations at its meeting on Monday, June 23, 2025.
In partnership with Civitas LLC, the county established a CDBG Advisory Committee to review applicants and determine eligible groups before making a recommendation to Council. The money stems from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and will provide Berkeley County communities with resources to address unique community development needs. Funding has been awarded to the following local organizations for costs associated with public facilities and public services:
- Grace Impact Center – $75,000 for kitchen expansion for Healthy Connections Education program
- Wassamasaw Tribe of Varnertown Indians – $75,000 for constructing new facility to support food sovereignty initiatives
- Berkeley Citizens Inc. DBA Unity Bay – $40,000 for ADA ramps/accessible shower modifications
- Lebanon Community Center – $150,000 for ADA bathroom modifications/electrical
upfit/flooring/kitchen appliances/painting/wall removal
- Landmark for Families – $100,000 for renovations for transitional housing for at-risk youth and young adults
- Community Options Inc. – $80,000 for interior renovations to improve accessibility/generator for emergency preparedness
- Children in Crisis DBA Kay Phillips Child Advocacy Center – $100,000 for parking lot expansion/relocation
- Joshua’s Army – $70,000 for food pantry remodel
- Moncks Corner Baptist Church – $25,000 for kitchen appliances and water tap for soup kitchen
- Berkeley County EMS – $50,000 for emergency supplies
- Cordesville Fire Department – $50,000 for community center upfit
- Pine Ridge Fire Department
- (Sandridge Station No. 11) – $13,085 for emergency supplies
- (Longridge Station No. 8) – $13,085 for emergency supplies / facility upgrades
- (Lebanon Station No. 9) – $13,085 for emergency supplies
- North Berkeley Fire Department
- (Shulerville Station 1) – $13,085 for emergency supplies
- (St. Stephen Fire Dept.) – $13,085 for emergency supplies
- (Forty-One Station 1) – $13,085 for emergency supplies
- (Forty-One Station 2) – $13,085 for emergency supplies
- (Shulerville Station 2) – $13,085 for emergency supplies
- (Pineville Station 1) – $13,085 for emergency supplies

The CDBG Program provides annual grants on a formula basis to states, cities, and counties to develop viable urban communities by providing decent housing and a suitable living environment, and by expanding economic opportunities, principally for low- and moderate-income persons.
