Berkeley County Supervisor Dan Davis signed a joint resolution yesterday that will continue the County’s support on regional stormwater education effort by the Ashley Cooper Stormwater Education Consortium. The signing ceremony took place at Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park where representatives from 13 county and municipal governments joined to renew their commitment to educate public on stormwater impacts on a regional basis.

“Education is the key to what we do for managing stormwater,” said Mr. Davis. “People need to know what stormwater is all about. We thank all our colleagues for the support of this Consortium.” Mr. Davis accepted recognition on behalf of Berkeley County for supporting the Consortium and providing leadership in waterway protection. Berkeley County has been part of this commitment since 2008, when the regional education strategy was first adopted.

The Ashley Cooper Consortium is a regional collaboration involving Clemson University’s Carolina Clear program in partnership with communities and educators from universities, state agencies and nonprofits.

The consortium partners are:

Berkeley County                                              Charleston County

Dorchester County                                           City of Charleston

City of Folly Beach                                           City of Goose Creek

City of Isle of Palms                                          Town of James Island

Town of Lincolnville                                       Town of Mount Pleasant

City of North Charleston                                Town of Sullivan’s Island

Town of Summerville

The Carolina Clear and the Ashley Cooper Consortium’s goal is to minimize polluted runoff by educating the general public, youth, and residential, commercial and government officials about how they can keep water in the state’s streams, rivers and beaches as clean as possible.

The initiative has become a national model for community-university collaboration to protect water quality.
